3D Printed Heat Set Insert Press – No Springs, No Bearings

Fully 3D-printable press for installing heat-set threaded inserts straight and repeatably. A parallelogram linkage keeps the heated tool vertical through its travel (about 90 mm), the arm stays where you leave it, and an adjustable V-groove clamp centres soldering irons or other heating tools with a handle of about 15-28 mm diameter. No springs, linear rods or bearings are used. Hardware to buy (from the creator's guide): 10 screws plus nuts and washers - M5x50 x2, M5x45 x3, M4x40 x4, M3x45 x1, M5 nylon-lock nuts x5, M4 nuts x4, M3 nylon-lock nut x1, M5 washers x8, 4 rubber feet 12 mm, and optional 4x20-25 mm countersunk wood screws to fix the base to the bench. Footprint 245 x 190 mm, height about 260 mm with the arm raised. Printing (creator's guide): 7 printed parts - base, column, shoulder, two identical links, wrist and moving jaw. Material PETG or ASA (the wrist and moving jaw must not be PLA, as they get warm), 0.2 mm layers, 4 perimeters, 15% infill for the base and 25% for the rest. Supports only for the wrist, under its knob, build plate only. Shoulder and wrist print standing upright. Before assembly, run a 5.5 mm drill bit through every 5.3 mm pivot hole.
