Da Vinci Clock
Free
Printable 3D recreation of Leonardo da Vinci's weight-driven clock, based on his sketches in the Codex Atlanticus. A falling weight drives a train of gears and wheels at a controlled pace, turning the hour and minute hands. Designed in Onshape.
Creator's note: the creator has not printed or tested it physically. It should work, but timekeeping may need tuning of the weights.
Extra parts needed:
- a 10-15 g teardrop weight for the right-side weight
- 2-3 metal coins (or small metal bearings/BBs) as ballast in the left bucket
- non-elastic braided nylon, polyester or micro-cord, about 0.75-1.0 mm (jewellery cord or light kite string); the strings shown in the model are visual only
Assembly, summarised from the creator's steps (the included PDF has the illustrated steps):
1. Fit the shafts into part B2.
2. Mount the pulley, studs and block on top of B2.
3. Insert the T-shaped rod into the block, the T-slot spheres into the T part, and the rotating part at the bottom of the T part.
4. Add the first gear, then the other gears and the ratchet on the other side of B2.
5. Put B3 on top and lodge the key.
6. Insert the hour and minute dials and hands.
7. Connect the other side of B2 to B1 and insert the assembly into the base.
8. Wrap a string around the left pulley and tie one end to the ratchet. Tie the right-side thread to the weight part and enclose it with the weights.
9. Load the bucket with coins to tune the driving force (usually 2 coins), tie another string on the left pulley, and clamp the right-side thread between the given parts - or replace that plastic part with a 10-15 g teardrop weight.
Files (79, as supplied by the creator): the full assembly STL (primary model file), 38 individual part STLs, 39 STEP CAD files and the creator's illustrated description PDF. All parts besides the assembly are separate downloadable attachments. Six part STLs appear twice in the source under assembly and part-studio names with identical content; both copies are kept as in the source. Material, layer height, infill and supports are not specified on the source listing.
Units: the source STLs are exported in metres (for example the 20 mm shaft measures 0.02 units). Most slicers offer to convert from metres on import; otherwise scale by 1000. Assembled, the clock is about 154 x 319 x 149 mm.
